Duct Sealing

Leaky duct work is a common problem and it reduces the amount of heat that makes it into each room in your home. This loss of heat causes you to turn up the furnace which costs you more money. Worse than spending too much, is being cold in your living room.

Creating the Air Barrier

The goal of duct sealing is the same as the goal of air sealing the rest of your home - create an air barrier. An air barrier ensures that air flow in the heating/cooling duct system flows the way it was intended to. Leaky supply ducts leak conditioned air out to unconditioned spaces. Leaky return ducts leak outside air into your home, which creates health risks. If leaky return ducts are located in damp crawl spaces, attics, or garages, that air leaks into the home creating air quality issues. To seal duct work, we use the non-toxic industry standard mastic - a putty-like material that dries solid.

Creating the Thermal Barrier
After we seal the duct work, we wrap it in a nice warm blanket of R-11 insulation. Insulating duct work reduces conductive and radiant heat loss, which means more heat gets to where it was intended to - the living spaces.
